Newly-named Chondria tumulosa by UH researchers, the alga has no known origin and has been observed smothering entire reefs and the corals, native algae and other organisms that live at the Pearl and Hermes Atoll.

The Life Sciences building has been completed and will be open for instruction and research for this fall 2020 semester. This 3-story, 70,000-square-foot facility contains 21 state-of-the-art teaching and research laboratories.

The School of Life Sciences of the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa was formed in the Fall of 2019 by the merger of the Departments of Biology, Botany and Microbiology, and began operations on January 1, 2020. Life Sciences is home to 5 Undergraduate Majors and 4 Graduate Programs:
Students may also Minor in Biology, Botany and Microbiology, obtain a certificate in the Marine Option Program (MOP), or become certified as a Clinical Microbiologist.
